NFL rules change: Challenges

A new rule will take place this season that has me thinking about an issue that has come up before. The rule is based on the replay booth and challenging a call. On EVERY score (both offensive and defensive) the booth will review the play. If there is any question on whether or not it was actually a score, the ref will get buzzed and he will then do an official review. The goal is to help coaches be able to save their reviews and not have to use them on decisive scoring plays. This is obviously going to stretch out the game. Maybe it will provide me with some extra time to check my FF for the week.

Really though, this was not well thought out. I have proposed a solution and still consider it to be a much better option. Under the 2010 rules, coaches were able to use 2 challenges. If they were successful on both of them they got a 3rd one. In a sense they were getting 2 strikes before being called out. This led to some very iffy calls NOT being challenged because coaches had already used their 2 challenges. So the best way to handle this is to keep the 2 strike rule, but allow coaches unlimited challenges. If the call is incorrect, why should a team have to stop at 2 or 3 challenges? If the refs are doing a poor enough job that they screw up 6 calls that are challengeable, then a coach should be able to successfully challenge and overturn all 6 of them. So let’s change the rule so that teams are allowed 2 incorrect challenges per game and get rid of the booth review on every scoring play.
